Innovate UK has launched a number of competitions aimed at SMEs and larger collaborations in the region.

Innovate UK Smart Grants

Innovate UK has launched a £25 million 'open grant' funding programme aimed at business to deliver ambitious or disruptive R&D innovations with a view to commercialisation.

Applications can come from any area of technology (including arts, design, media or creative industries), science or engineering and be applied to any part of the economy.

Project durations between six and 18 months must have total eligible project costs between £25,000 and £500,000. They can be single or collaborative projects. Projects over £25,000 and 19 months in length must be collaborative projects.

The minimum project size for this competition is £25,000. Innovate UK does not expect to make any grants over £2m, except in exceptional circumstances.

SME support to evaluation innovative medical technologies: Round 4

The Office for Life Sciences (OLS) with Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, has launched a £1.5 million competition to support SMEs around the evaluation of innovative medical devices, diagnostics and regulated digital health products.

Businesses must be a micro, small or medium sized enterprise (SME) based in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland and have a medical or diagnostic device, or regulated digital health product with a CE marking, that has been marketed for less than five years. 

Two grants are available up to £50k to engage in either planning and preparation for a clinical study, or up to £250k to undertake a study to collect clinical performance and cost-effectiveness data.

UK Research and Innovation Strength in Places

UKRI has launched a two stage competition for UK businesses and publicly funded research organisations to bid as collaborations for between £10 million and £50 million.

The competition is seeking place-based bids which build on existing research and innovation capability and present a credible plan of new research and innovation activities that will deliver significant positive impact on economic growth and jobs.

Successful collaborations at expression of interest stage will be selected to receive up to £50,000 in 'seed corn' funding to develop a full stage proposal, with awards expected in January 2021.
